Because of its size and the endless number of things to do, a trip to the South Lake Tahoe village of Heavenly requires planning, but it doesn’t have to be that complicated. This travel guide will help you plan the perfect family vacation to Heavenly Village.
What Makes Heavenly Unique for Families
No matter what time of year you visit, Heavenly Village is full of fun things to do. There’s a unique mix of natural beauty and a bustling town center that ensures there won’t be a dull moment on your family vacation.
You’ll Visit A True Winter Wonderland
Winter in Heavenly Village is arguably the most magical time of the year. With an average of 360 inches of snowfall at the resort, skiing conditions are usually nothing short of incredible. But families also have plenty to do off the slopes, including sipping hot cocoa while shopping or ice skating in the heart of the village.
It’s the Perfect Place for Fun in the Sun
Visiting Heavenly in the spring and summer delivers fun for all ages. Whether biking around the lake, roasting marshmallows around a campfire, or trying a new water sport on Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Village is the perfect location for families to build core memories.
Families Can Experience Fall Colors in the Mountains
Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Heavenly to see the bright fall colors around the deep blue waters on a hike in Lake Tahoe. Few places match the crisp mountain air and warm scenery of Heavenly in the fall. Looking for things to do? Take a hike through two states in Van Sickle Bi-State Park or go to nearby Fallen Leaf Lake for beautiful fall foliage.
Fun Activities On and Off the Slopes
Now that you have a better idea of what Heavenly is like, let’s jump into some fun things to do. Here is a look at some of the can’t-miss activities in South Lake Tahoe.
Heavenly Ski Resort
Skiing and snowboarding at Heavenly is an adventure you won’t want to miss. Families usually start at the Gondola. Why? The line moves fast, you get stunning views of Lake Tahoe on the ride up, and it drops you off near plenty of green terrain. There’s even tubing and sledding available! Alternatively, Boulder Lodge and California Lodge have green runs for the whole family to ski.
Lake Tahoe
In the spring and summer, the lake’s crystal clear waters and stunning mountain scenery are full of activities for the whole family. Many of the popular beaches have water sports rentals right from shore. The clear kayaks are a popular option for seeing the granite boulders under the translucent alpine waters. You can also rent a speedboat in Timber Cove Marina and go wakeboarding, tubing, or water skiing.
Shopping
Heavenly Village has a robust selection of stores and eateries with something for everyone. Walk your way through the dozens of shops where you can purchase local artwork, souvenirs, and even find a new set of skis. If you have little ones, Village Toys is a great place to find them a token of your time in South Lake Tahoe.
Après Ski
After a day in the mountains, what’s more fun than sitting around a table with your loved ones, reliving your memories, and creating new ones? Heavenly Village has plenty of places you can après ski in style or have dinner on a budget. Here are a few family-friendly finds that we’d love to share.
Base Camp Pizza
Located just steps away from the gondola and ice skating rink, this is easily the most popular restaurant in the village. Put your name on the list and expect to wait at least an hour on the weekends—but it’s worth it for the convenience and above-average food. The pizza is reliable, and they have plenty of good appetizers and entrees if you feel like trying something else.
Tipsy Putt
For families who want some entertainment while they après ski, Tipsy Putt is as fun as it gets. The Heavenly Village outpost of the Sacramento chain offers both tabletop and traditional mini golf for all ages. There’s a small menu of pub grub and a good beer selection, as well as plenty of TVs for watching sports. They are 21+ after 7 pm, but if you’re already inside, they are pretty relaxed about enforcing that rule.
Himmel Haus
This traditional German food hall will transport you to the Alps with its authentic decor, liters of pilsner, and delicious cuisine. It is located just a short drive from the village and is open for lunch and dinner most days.
Stateline Casinos
If your kids are all grown up, cross the California and Nevada border and enjoy a small slice of Las Vegas lakeside near Heavenly Village. There are a few casinos to choose from, with Harveys and Bally’s being two favorites for locals and tourists alike.
Lodging at Heavenly

Tips for Visiting Heavenly Ski Resort
Getting to the Resort
Driving in on Highway 50, you’ll see magical views of the nearly 200 mi² lake glistening in the mountain sun. If you’re coming from San Francisco, the drive takes approximately 3.5 hours. However, it can take as long as 9 hours if you get caught in traffic. Always try to be on the road before 10 am to avoid longer drive times.
Parking at Heavenly Ski Resort
If you’re skiing, there are four entrances to choose from. California Lodge and Heavenly Gondola are both on the California side and are pay-to-park entrances. You’ll need to reserve a spot in the California Lodge lot on holidays and weekends. The two entrances on the Nevada side, Boulder Lodge and Stagecoach Lodge, have free parking and are generally quite a bit less crowded.
Safety Tips
When visiting Heavenly Ski Resort, there are some safety factors to consider. Always do the following: * Bring tire chains in the winter (for 2WD). * Take any food out of your car (it’s bear country). * Watch out for rattlesnakes and poison oak when hiking. * Check wind reports if kayaking.
