A Guide to Banff’s Iconic Ski Resorts
February 03, 2025The town of Banff, Alberta, and Banff National Park, Canada’s first and most renowned park, are bucket list destinations for many global travelers. Known for its towering snow-covered peaks, glaciers, and thousands of acres of pristine wilderness, it's no wonder that this charming area attracts outdoor recreation enthusiasts year-round.
Banff is the gateway to Alberta’s famed “Big 3” ski resorts: Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay. Each resort offers a distinct outdoor recreation and hospitality experience. From wide-open powder runs to family-friendly slopes, the region is a dream for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. A stay in Banff promises unmatched powder skiing, opportunities to explore rustic-chic ski villages, and viewings of North America’s most famous natural beauty. Let's dive into what makes these Banff ski resorts iconic.

Banff Sunshine Village
Just a 20-minute drive from downtown Banff, Banff Sunshine Village is a high-altitude haven renowned for its legendary powder snow. Sitting at 7,200 feet on the Continental Divide, Banff Sunshine enjoys consistent powder conditions throughout its long season, which stretches from early November to late May.
With over 3,300 acres of skiable terrain spanning three mountains, it’s a perfect playground for skiers of all levels, especially for travelers interested in pairing a ski trip with a stay in the Banff area.
For beginners, gentle runs pair an important confidence-building experience with sweeping alpine views. For experts, Delirium Dive offers adrenaline-pumping steep descents and waist-deep powder—avalanche gear and a partner are required for this adventure.
Beyond skiing, see jaw-dropping views of the surrounding peaks on Sunshine Village’s scenic gondola ride and treat yourself to a hearty meal at cozy dining spots like Creekside Bar + Grill and Mad Trappers.
Lake Louise Ski Resort
Known for its postcard-perfect views, Lake Louise Ski Resort is one of North America’s largest and most scenic ski areas.
A 40-minute drive from Banff, this sprawling resort includes 4,200 acres of terrain spread across four mountain faces, with runs to suit every type of skier. From the moment you arrive, the breathtaking backdrop of the surrounding peaks and Lake Louise creates a one-of-a-kind alpine experience.
Beginners can ease into skiing with a few low-key runs off the Glacier Express Chair, while intermediate skiers will love exploring the wide-open trails on the Front Side.
For advanced and expert skiers, the resort’s Back Bowls deliver thrilling challenges, with steep chutes, powder-filled glades, and natural terrain features to navigate. This year, a new heated six-seater chairlift carries skiers up the mountain to the West Bowl in record time.
For non-skiers or those looking for a break, Lake Louise’s variety of activities includes snowshoe tours, restaurants, and the chance to ride the Grizzly Gondola for mountain vistas and perhaps some bear sightings. At the top of the gondola ride, visit the Wildlife Viewing Interpretive Centre to learn about the animals that call the Canadian Rockies home from engaging exhibits and knowledgeable staff.
A mid-mountain meal at the nearby Whitehorn Bistro is a must. The menu of locally inspired dishes and Alberta-made craft cocktails is served alongside stunning panoramic views.

Mount Norquay
Mount Norquay is a perfect spot for families, beginners, and those looking for a relaxed day on the slopes. This ski area is the smallest of Alberta's Big 3, but also the oldest established ski area in Western Canada.
Mount Norquay has an intimate, laid-back atmosphere, ideal for learning to ski or enjoying a stress-free alpine escape with shorter lift lines. Its manageable size and mix of green and blue runs make it especially popular with families and first-timers.
Over 60% of the terrain here is rated beginner or intermediate. Expect to find soft slopes and wide spaces that are great for building confidence. But rest assured, more experienced skiers can enjoy the thrills of steeper runs too.
Norquay is also the only resort in the area to offer night skiing, a unique experience where you can carve turns under the stars. For even more thrills, the resort’s snow tubing park is a hit with both kids and adults, a high-speed fun experience without the need for ski skills.
Mount Norquay is the only Big 3 ski area without on-mountain lodging. Thankfully, there are plenty of accommodations in Banff with options for parties of all sizes.
